Intention Statement

Do your little bit of good where you are; it is those little bits of good put all together that overwhelm the world.

— Desmond Tutu.

Over the next 12 months I plan on immersing myself in my Digital Marketing Master’s program. I want to become more knowledgeable in the field of marketing and be able to better express myself through creative outlets. I have never been the outgoing type “A” person, but I love to connect with people throughout work and other hobbies of mine. It is a weakness that I have been trying to work on since college.

Recently, I have been working with an advertising company, Shop Dine Play, near my hometown by running their social media campaigns. Shop Dine Play sends advertisements to the local area with coupons so that people can save money or try something new. Reports have shown that since Shop Dine Play’s social media footprint has grown, consumers have been more active in using these coupons. I am proud of myself for helping the company grow, but I feel like I can do more. This company connects the local community and promotes them by advertising for them. However, I do not know how to be more involved in the community because I have not learned enough knowledge yet. I believe that Shop Dine Play can do more than just send out coupons but bring local shops together through festivals, “shop local Saturdays”, or having one business work with another to reach a bigger goal. I hope to learn more about web design, SEO, and how social media influences people. That is why I am so excited to start my mastery journey.

Digital Marketing Campaign Development

My original timeline and goals for the Digital Marketing Campaign Development were very similar to what we did in class. My goal was to create a marketing plan for SDP, but of course I wrote one for Downtown Donuts. This digital marketing plan included almost everything I had done throughout the course. Graphs, charts, budgets, different marketing campaigns that can be implemented immediately. This is a very detailed plan to market Downtown Donuts with the goal to open up a new store in the next city. I now recognize how a marketing plan should all come together and there is much planning and communication involved. Throughout the whole course, my favorite sections were on web development and new media. I believe that having a strong website first is how any business should start a marketing plan. However, a full plan should be approved before this happens. For example, I can make a website look pretty and be easily functional for users but if I do not have a plan then a new design will have to take place if the owner wants to include a blog which was not talked about before the initial design phase. Of course, small changes can be implemented whenever but an idea as massive as having brand ambassadors on the site will take time. This is the importance of planning ahead.

The one thing I did not know would be assigned during this class was branding myself. I heard it a thousand times before when I was getting my bachelor’s degree, but I took no course to pursue it. Now, I understand that branding myself is a great tactic to get new jobs or a promotion and influence someone’s decision on projects. When I Googled myself, I was pleasantly surprised that many of my achievements were already found on Google, but I do not have a “home base”. My plan is to create a website just for myself and let consumers know who I am, have potential companies hire me, and encourage communication with users.

Digital Marketing and the Law

My original goal for the class Digital Marketing and the Law, I wanted to learn how the First Amendment affects the internet. Many regulations and laws are determined by the First Amendment and it is in great question today what many large internet platforms are doing today. Terms and conditions are great legal enforcements that tell users what a site is able to do with the content that users post. For example, Facebook has been censoring many people’s posts and the users are very upset. However, private parties such as Facebook do reserve the right to take down content of their choosing. Since many people do not read these T&C or the privacy policies, they do not have issues until something they disagree with makes face.

One thing I did not think about in my original goals for this class was copyrights, cybercrime, and defamation. It is not because I think they are unimportant, I simply forgot. Cybercrime is very serious and should have harsher punishments along with more securities against such crimes. Because so many people are affected by people who commit cybercrimes, such as identity theft, loss in money, or other outcomes, these criminals should have harsher penalties. Users who also cause defamation to others should feel the brunt of the law. There is no morally right reason to cause another person harm to their name, business, or family. Yes, some cases are innocent typos or misinformation, but those who cause intentional harm have to go through court.

Spam, while not illegal, also needs to follow certain laws. The CAN-SPAM Act puts regulations on businesses or people who send unwanted emails, texts, or content to consumers. Every act of spam must show who sent it, the physical address, the subject cannot be misleading, and there always has to be an option for recipients to opt out of these messages. No user appreciates spam, and it has been an issue since 1978. The CAN-SPAM Act has been trying to prohibit spam since 2003 and has been doing a good job since.

Digital Analytics and Optimization

My original objective was very vague and I originally thought of being able to learn about how to read graphs and charts from data in this class. I wasn’t that far off per se. This class, Digital Analytics and Optimization, has been extremely helpful. I am really glad that the Google Analytics Certification was offered up because sometime finding these certifications through Google are very complicated.

Being able to read the web analytics data is so important to the success of the company. Being unable to read this will not make a big impact on marketing success that a company would want. Or, misreading data could be detrimental. With an experienced and or qualified employee, web analytics is amazing. Tools such as Google Analytics allows a marketer to see how many users are on the website, where they’re from, how long they stay on the site, where they exited. There are many more examples I could’ve given but that would take too long. Knowing these things give marketers a better idea on how to fix issues on the website or what engages on social media and blogs. All these lead to increasing traffic and sales.

The issue of using paid versus unpaid analytics tools is a tough problem. Unpaid allows you to save money but then you also need to hire someone who is well versed in the subject. More expenses. Unpaid tools are also usually more complicated to use, such as Google Analytics. Paid tools are easier to use and you may not need an employee who is as well versed. However, you’re paying for it right? These decisions should be carefully considered when choosing which web analytics tool you will want to use.

Public Relations

When I thought of public relations in terms of how businesses may use this, at first, I could only think of reacting to a crisis and making a statement on the news channels. However, not all PR is negative and needs a news channel covering an event. PR releases are meant to inform consumers of new events or openings within a business and release that to the public in many different forms of communication. Yes, PR should be consulted when a crisis arises, but the goal is to predict an event before it happens so that the company can correct an issue without having social media make a mountain out of a mole hill.

The goal is to create meaningful connections within the community and show how great your business may be. With a solid foundation of trust and value, crises will not become hard hits on sales or funding. Creating meaningful relationships with other business owners, charities, or outreach programs will also influence future projects. With the help of these relationships, a company could put in motion a project and it take off because so many other people support the business.

These kinds of relationships do not happen overnight or through one email. They are built over time and through dedicated work. It can start with one company wanting to have another’s products sold in their store or partnering together to raise money for a foundation both supports. Working together can happen many ways, but the idea is to become part of the community and support it.

Advance Search Engine Optimization

Advance Search Engine Optimization is a great course. There were many resources that were brought to my attention to improve the SEO of Downtown Donuts. SEO is not just about finding the right keywords to boost rankings on Google. Probably like many other students, I thought Google was the main and almost only search engine that businesses should be using to determine their search rankings, but a business should not only focus on Google. There are other search engines such as Bing, Yahoo, or even Facebook to make sure that a business is able to be found.

Search engine optimization also includes Google My Business Profile, reviews, internal and external links, and content. Having a Google business profile allows a searcher to see local searches and easily identify contact information, location, and reviews. Consumers trust reviews much more than traditional marketing techniques and reviews are also forms of new content. With new content, searchers are able to find businesses easier. Using external links that send a consumer to your website also promotes SEO rankings.

Keywords are very important for SEO. There are many ways to pick which keywords will be best for a business. Brainstorming with employees is a great start, but combing through reviews and comments from customers is even better. Using these comments, Downtown Donuts can find the most common keywords used to describe Downtown Donuts or commonly misspelled words. Downtown Donuts should be careful not to slip into black hat techniques by keyword stuffing or link farms just to boost rankings. Also, looking towards your competition to see what they are doing to promote their business is a good start to piggyback off of techniques are have been proven to work by the competition.

Advanced Digital Marketing Strategies

I thought Advance Digital Marketing Strategies was going to be about social media marketing, mobile advertising, and email marketing but more in depth. Some of these were touched on in the IMAP created throughout this course, but not specifically. I was expecting more certificates, such as Google’s Mobile Ads, HubSpot’s Email Marketing, etc. to be some assignments due throughout this course so when we have graduated it will be easier for us to find a job and already have some qualifications under our belt. However, Advance Digital Marketing Strategies was about establishing trust through media kits, security implements, and creating a business that is more human than others. This is much more encouraging than creating ads just to sell.

I appreciated this course more than I expected because I realized that marketing is not only about selling a product, but connecting with customers and creating a wholistic community. Implementing some of the teachings I learned throughout this course will allow me to better present marketing plans to bosses and represent the customer at the same time. Creating a website that is easy to navigate, informative for consumers, and ad campaigns are simple ways to get a business’s name out. Including the data to back up how well campaigns will bring in new customers is the best thing I learned in this course. Media Kits was a new thing I learned about and I thought it was a great idea to have another business essentially do the work for you to promote your own business. There was a lot of self studying to do throughout this course but I feel like I am better prepared for real work now.

New Media Marketing

New Media Marketing was not the kind of course I was expecting when I started. I thought New Media would be new ways to put the word out into the community, which is was, but I was expecting new ways such as other forms of social media or different and engaging advertising. New Media Marketing was customer focused and how to create influencer programs to better entertain conversations. A great way to gain better influence with your surrounding community is through other customers who appreciate what your business is about and they will advocate for you on their own. With the proper tools and structure brand ambassadors can be a great tool to meet your company’s business goals such as increase engagement or sales. They can even help answer questions with other customers such as when the store opens, what flavors are available that day, and create new contests within the community and store.

In the near future, I will be implementing a new brand ambassador program with Downtown Donuts in order to increase sales, traffic to the website, and engagement with our customers. There are many great people who already promote our business because we have delicious donuts and great customer service. For Downtown Donuts to expand into the next city, we need our name out in the community so expansion will have an easier transition. With solid foundations in the brand ambassador program once the new store opens in Dothan, Alabama, we can keep sales up and keep expanding!

Digital Storytelling

My original plan was to learn how to create a positive and consistent message for my chosen business. I had a lot of fun learning how to accomplish this and created a fun video about Downtown Donuts’ brand story. We are here to keep it simple and sweet. During the Digital Storytelling and Branding course, I was able to study some cases on how businesses handle their brand reputation and what it takes to keep positive in the midst of controversy. Keeping your brand image in tact is not all about how you handle crises, but also how you handle day to day business. For example, I learned that Starbucks took 3 hours to close their stores and retrain baristas on how to properly brew an espresso shot and pour steamed milk. Starbucks realized that they were losing their touch with coffee and in order to correct it, they trained over 135,000 baristas across the country to get back to their roots, one cup at a time. This was the most inspiration thing I learned during this class because sometimes a business needs to refocus on their mission and not how large they become.

It is so important to stay true to who you are and keep ethical business practices. I feel more confident in creating a brand message than I ever did before. I also feel better about implementing a marketing strategy so that Downtown Donuts can promote themselves more in the community with a goal of opening a new store in the future.

Reflection

I am at the end of my class in Digital Marketing Fundamentals and have learned many great things! The course was a lot of individual research, unlike the previous class, but I was able to choose what I wanted to focus on within a particular topic. This kept me engaged and motivated to learn more about marketing fundamentals.

In the beginning of my journey, I thought that I would be able to work with Shop Dine Play Athens and implement strategies learned here. However, this business did not meet some requirements so I had to find another. Remarkably, I walked into Downtown Donuts and asked the owner to work with him and he immediately said yes! It just goes to show how being professional and prepared can open up new doors.

The class allowed me to broaden my view of digital marketing fundamentals to more than just social media and email marketing. For example, retargeting was something I had seen many times before but did not understand how or why. Now I do, and will implement this into the business I have chosen to work with, and my goal is to not be creepy. Another great tool I learned of was Sprout Social. This platform is a great tool to monitor online engagement, social media, and respond to consumers!

My expectations of this class were different from what I really learned. I thought that I would be able to read about successful trends, but instead I researched and learned how different techniques can improve the visibility of a website and encourage consumers to return. Also, not everything revolves around social media, but it is a large factor. The most important goal I had in this class was to learn how to influence my target market through new content or campaigns. Now, I realize that it is not the same for every company. This class has given me the tools and knowledge on how to influence a market but it is up to me figure out what works for the business. It is different for everybody.
